What is which wheels are braked by the parking brake?

The parking brake, also commonly referred to as the handbrake or emergency brake, is designed to keep a stationary vehicle in place when parked. It operates independently of the primary braking system and typically acts on the rear wheels of a vehicle.

In most modern vehicles, the parking brake is cable-operated and engages the rear brake calipers or brake shoes. This means that the rear wheels are the ones that are braked by the parking brake. In some older vehicles or certain specialized applications, the parking brake may also act on the front wheels in addition to or instead of the rear wheels.

It should be noted that the parking brake is not intended to be used as a substitute for the regular braking system while driving. It is only designed for use when the vehicle is parked or stationary.
